*THE SPIRITUAL STATUS OF THE CHILDREN OF BELIEVERS:* _*A Biblical, Covenantal, and Historic Anglican Perspective*_   *INTRODUCTION*   Few subjects have generated more misunderstanding among Christians than the **spiritual status of the children of believers**. Too often the discussion is shaped by denominational traditions, rationalistic assumptions, or cultural practices rather than by the whole counsel of God.   Historic Anglicanism, standing upon *Holy Scripture*, the *Ancient Ecumenical/Catholic Tradition*, and the *Reformed Catholic Faith* expressed in the *Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion*, the *Book of Common Prayer*, and the *Anglican Catechism*, teaches that the children of believers occupy a unique covenantal position before God. *THE SOBERING PATTERN OF SPIRITUAL COMPROMISE*   One of the recurring lessons of Scripture is that *a genuine beginning does not guarantee a faithful ending*. Calling, privilege, sound doctrine, spiritual gifts, and even close association with Christ do not exempt anyone from the *need for continual watchfulness and perseverance.*   Among the *seven churches* addressed by the risen Christ in Revelation 2–3, *five* received serious rebukes for various forms of spiritual decline— - loss of first love,  - doctrinal compromise,  - tolerance of immorality,  - spiritual deadness, or  - lukewarmness.  Only *Smyrna* (the second in the list) and *Philadelphia* (the second to the last) remained free from Christ's accusation, receiving encouragement rather than rebuke.   Likewise, among the *twelve apostles* personally chosen, trained, and commissioned by Christ, *one—Judas Iscariot—betrayed his Master*.
